Group homes · Virginia

Websites for Virginia group homes.

A website for your Virginia home, for $300 flat, from a studio that started in Chesterfield County.

In Virginia, who licenses you depends on who you serve. Below: the state’s kinds of small home, linked to the Code, and what to put on your site.

The names

Two state departments license most small homes in Virginia: the Department of Social Services (VDSS) and the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS). Each kind below links to the section of the Code of Virginia or the Virginia Administrative Code it comes from.

Adult foster care

One provider caring for up to three adults. It is a local social services program, not an assisted living licence.

Agency Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) and your local department of social services

Read the rule Code of Virginia § 63.2-100

Sponsored residential

A family (the sponsor) supports people in its own home, under the supervision of a DBHDS-licensed provider. The waiver rules say no more than two people.

Agency Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS), which licenses the provider that supervises the sponsor

Read the rule 12VAC35-105-20 12VAC30-122-20

Group home or community residential service

A community home with eight or fewer residents and 24-hour supervision.

Agency DBHDS

Read the rule 12VAC35-105-20 § 37.2-405

Assisted Living Facility (ALF)

Personal and health care services and 24-hour supervision for four or more adults who are aged or infirm or who have disabilities.

Agency VDSS (the licence comes from its Commissioner)

Read the rule Code of Virginia § 63.2-100 § 63.2-1701

Checked against each linked page on 1 October 2026. This is a plain summary, not legal advice: the rule itself, or the agency, has the final word.

Your site

  1. Name your department and your kind of home. A case manager placing someone with a developmental disability is looking for a DBHDS-licensed service. One placing an older adult may be looking at assisted living or adult foster care. Say which you are, in the state’s words, and you save everyone a call.
  2. If you’re a sponsor family, tell it like one. In sponsored residential, people live in the sponsor’s own home. Your site can show that home and your family’s routine, and name your supervising provider the way you both want.
  3. Keep the count honest. Up to three in adult foster care, eight or fewer in a DBHDS group home, four or more in an assisted living facility. Say how many you serve and whether a bed is open, and change it from your admin page when it changes.
  4. Show the house as it is. Corrected phone photos of the real rooms. That’s what we did for a residential group home in North Chesterfield: see Beyon Vital, before and after.
  5. Leave the rules to the source. We don’t write licence numbers, waiver names or eligibility rules from memory. Send us the document and it goes up as written.
  6. No meeting needed. The whole job is done online. Your home’s name and a way to reach you is enough to start; we write the words.
