How do you look up a licensed assisted living facility in Virginia?
To look up a licensed assisted living facility in Virginia, use the Virginia Department of Social Services’ Assisted Living Facility Search: type the facility’s name, or filter by city or county, zip code and special services. VDSS: Assisted Living Facility Search
VDSS says its searches are where you view a facility’s inspections and violations. Here is what counts as one, and what to do if you run one.
The search
- By name. Type the facility’s name and search. VDSS: Assisted Living Facility Search
- By place. Pick the city or county, or a zip code.
- By service. Filter for non-ambulatory residents, assisted living care or a special care unit.
- Read the record. Inspections and violations are listed for each licensed facility.
What counts
- VDSS licenses assisted living facilities: homes that give personal and health care services and 24-hour supervision to four or more adults who are aged or infirm or who have disabilities. VDSS: assisted living facilities
- An assisted living facility is not a nursing home. Nursing homes are regulated by the Virginia Department of Health. VDSS: assisted living facilities
- Smaller homes, and group homes for people with developmental disabilities, are licensed differently. Virginia’s kinds of home.

If you run one
- Use the name on your license. Families and case managers check you on the VDSS search, so the name on your site should match it exactly. VDSS: Assisted Living Facility Search
- Say what you’re set up for. If you take residents who can’t walk on their own, or run a special care unit, say so in plain words near the top.
- Make the next step easy. Real photos, a phone that gets answered and a tour form: what a group home website should include.
